What every stain job needs, no matter the city
Before the calendar, understand the conditions. A stain performs when three things line up:
- Dry wood. The boards must be dry to the right moisture level so the stain can soak in and cure. Recent rain or snowmelt pushes the job back.
- The right temperature. Most stains have a working range, usually mild to warm. Too cold and the finish will not cure properly. Too hot and it can dry on the surface before it soaks in, which leaves lap marks and weak adhesion.
- A dry window after. The finish needs hours, sometimes a day or more, to set before rain or heavy dew hits it.

Second, the freeze-thaw shoulder seasons are risky. Staining too early in spring, before the wood has dried from snowmelt, or too late in fall, when a night can drop below freezing before the finish cures, invites failure. Austin summers are long and hot. Direct sun on a deck can push surface temperatures high enough that stain dries before it can penetrate, leaving lap marks and a weaker bond. Summer staining is not impossible, but it means following the shade, starting early, and avoiding the hottest hours. Spring and fall simply make all of that easier.
Respect the humidity
Humidity is the quiet factor. It slows how fast wood dries after washing or rain, and it keeps overnight dew heavy. Wood that feels dry on the surface can still hold moisture underneath. Checking moisture before staining matters even more in a humid climate, and so does making sure there is a genuinely dry stretch ahead for the finish to cure.
